About Pieter Jan

Born on a 200-hectare arable farm set on the clay soils of Groningen in the north of the Netherlands, I spent countless hours outdoors, working in the yard and fields. Those early days of sowing, harvesting, and learning from nature instilled in me a deep respect for the land and laid a lasting foundation for my future. My connection to farming runs even deeper: my family’s legacy is documented in a book dating back to 1600, and I am proud to be the 11th generation continuing this enduring tradition.

Past experiences & testimonials

Pieter Jan joined Kraft Heinz as a contractor in November 2022 to support the development and implementation of the company’s soil health and regenerative agriculture programmes globally. He was chosen as the project lead based on his extensive procurement and agriculture expertise, soil science background and proven ability to engage with both senior business leaders and across the value chain with growers, suppliers and third party implementation partners.

He is a highly valued member of the team, providing expert insight and capable project management and people engagement skills to drive key projects for Kraft Heinz towards our agriculture and decarbonisation goals.

I would highly recommend Pieter Jan to others seeking extra capacity and leadership in this space!

Martina Henry
Director Agriculture Sustainability

Pieter Jan helped us define our vision on sustainability for our seed potato cultivation. With his broad expertise in the potato sector and specific knowledge in the field of sustainability and soil, he has determined the direction with us.

He contributed to this by sharing his valuable expertise with us, without being decisive for the outcome. This has certainly helped us on our route to defining a sustainable perspective for our seed potato production.

Frank van de Werff
Manager Production and Logistics

We have worked with Pieter Jan on various assignments focused on regenerative agriculture transition with key partner companies, in the US and in Europe.

Pieter Jan is extremely professional and nice to work with. He managed to create a strong relationship with our teams, and easily overcame the diversity of characters and cultures.

He is highly capable of adapting to the context and delivering on projects. I warmly recommend Pieter Jan.

Bastien Sachet
CEO

I know Pieter Jan since the second step in his career within the Agri & Food and got to know him as someone who figures everything out in detail and what he then works out.

He is convincing involved stakeholders where necessary and includes them in his projects. He is open, straightforward and knows what he is talking about. He is social, makes connections quickly, is inventive and has shown good negotiation skills. He acts proactively and is not afraid to change things. As a thinking “pragmatist,” he works towards solutions. As a farmer’s son, his heart lies in the agricultural sector and he knows how to combine this with his broad knowledge and experience in supply chain management. This is where his strength is.

As a person, he has continued to develop himself in the past years, and (like me) has gained a more holistic and systemic view of the challenges facing our agriculture and food system. As I perceive it, he would like to further disseminate this in his new role as an independent Consultant Regenerative Agriculture and in doing so contribute to a future-proof food system.

What is it?

Addressing a Global Challenge

Soils around the world are under strain. A significant issue is accelerated erosion and the rapid loss of topsoil, the vital layer that nurtures our crops, threaten not only environmental balance but also the very foundation of food production (source). This decline poses serious risks for sustainable agriculture.

Implications for Food Companies

In today’s dynamic climate, food businesses face mounting difficulties in securing high, quality agricultural raw materials. Extreme weather, whether prolonged droughts or sudden, heavy rains, exacerbates the fragility of depleted soils, undermining their ability to absorb and retain water, and diminishing overall resilience to the changing environmental conditions.

Key Causes of Soil Degradation:

Compaction: Intensive use of heavy machinery compresses the soil, reducing its capacity for water infiltration, proper gas exchange, and robust root development.

Disrupted Soil Biology: Practices such as excessive tillage and the overreliance on synthetic inputs have diminished the natural abundance and diversity of soil organisms. A thriving ecosystem beneath the surface is essential for building organic matter and supplying vital nutrients to plants.
